Victoria's favorite poop mascot will attend a special ceremony in Seattle on Friday to mark his retirement. Victoria elementary school teacher, James Skwarok, debuted Mr. Floatie on April 1, 2004, at the University of Victoria to announce the formation of People Opposed to Outfall Pollution (POOP).
Mr. Floatie became the symbol associated with the region's practice of dumping sewage into the Salish Sea. But now that the sewage treatment plant is finally going ahead, Mr. Floatie is voluntarily stepping down.
Mr. Floatie will be accompanied by Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps, and Paul Nursey, CEO of Tourism Victoria. The event will be hosted by Canadian Consul General James Hill.
While no Victoria media has been invited, a news release obtained by CFAX states Mayor Helps and Tourism Victoria have been working with their Seattle counterparts and government officials for the past two years to demonstrate their unwavering commitment to achieving sewage treatment for the Capital Region.
