Staff and volunteers served a hearty Thanksgiving meal to over 1,000 of the region's homeless and working poor today (Wed).
Volunteers included local politicians and media representatives who rolled up their sleeves to dish out turkey, potatoes, and all the trimmings.
Grant McKenzie says it takes a lot of food to feed that many people:
"They've prepared about 1,000 lbs of turkey, 500 lbs of potatoes, 250 lbs of stuffing, and gravy, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, all sorts of stuff. So it's a really big meal and a real treat. And the family, we call everybody at Our Place family, all the family members just love a special day like this."
McKenzie says all sorts of people attend, including the homeless, people who live alone and want company, as well as families and individuals living in poverty.
Gordon McDonald is on disability, and says without Our Place, he wouldn't have had a turkey dinner.
"It's hard with no money for food to get a turkey dinner and stuff at home. So you know, if you're on disability and stuff like this. So places like this helps us, gives us a good meal. And without this place I would be surviving most of the time."
Our Place is already gearing up for the cold weather, appealing for socks, blankets, sleeping bags, and warm clothing. Donations can be dropped off anytime at 919 Pandora Avenue.
