Mayor Lisa Helps is saying sorry for how new bike lanes are rolling out on Fort Street.
"I am going to write a letter of apology to the Downtown Victoria Business Association, especially to the members of their association on Fort Street."
Helps acknowledges the city could have done a better job working with businesses on the design for the bike corridor. She says the city should "take into consideration how their business operates and how we can build the bike corridor to make sure that it's enhancing and not inhibiting their businesses."
The Downtown Victoria Business Association recently hosted a meeting with about 40 Fort Street business owners to hear their complaints and share them with the city. Many are worried about reducing vehicle traffic down to one lane in certain areas. About 30 parking spots will also be removed. In recent weeks a petition has been gathering signatures asking for work on the Fort Street section of the bike network to be put on hold
