The BC government is aiming to take big money out of municipal politics with legislation that bans corporate and union donations and limits donations by individuals to $1,200.
The proposed amendments follow consultations with key stakeholders such as UBCM which represents 189 local governments, and also bans out of province contributions to local elections.
Union of BC Municipalities president, Wendy Booth says the proposed changes support fairness during municipal elections and came from concerned communities around the province.
"Really, it came grassroots from communities, both large and small that wanted this from the local level and it really just levels the playing field for all candidates in local government elections,"
The amendments will apply to all elections starting with the 2018 general elections.
