Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps has been returned to office for a second term.
"This campaign has been a referendum on the future of the city. And we can see really clearly by more than 3,000 votes - my goal was to win by 2,000 votes, so we topped that by 1,000 - we can see very clearly what the future of the city looks like. The future of the city looks inclusive, it looks like there's room in this city for everyone forever."
Helps pledges to work with those who voted for her, as well as those who did not.
It was expected to be a close race, but Helps took 12,642 votes - close to 43 per cent of the vote. Her three main challengers were Stephen Hammond (8,717), Mike Geoghegan (4,335) and Bruce McGuigan (2,377). They combined for 52 per cent of the vote.
Second place finisher Stephen Hammond thinks Councilor Ben Isitt is poised to become de facto Mayor. He says that's because Isitt, together with four other elected councilors who have similar political leanings, will have a majority on the new Council.
Ben Isitt was re-elected with more votes than any other City Council candidate, followed by incumbent councillor Jeremy Loveday.
They'll be joined by thee "Together Victoria" slate candidates: Laurel Collins, Sarah Potts, and Sharmarke Dubow.
Stephen Hammond, who finished second in the Mayor's Race, says that will have huge ramifications. "Ben will be the de facto mayor because they will be able to decide all, or most, policies for the next 4 years"
Incumbents Geoff Young, Charlayne Thornton-Joe and Marianne Alto were re-elected. Incumbent Pam Madoff was not.
