The latest travel survey in the Capital Region shows more people are opting to leave their car at home, in favour of transit or cycliing.
Oak Bay Mayor Nils Jensen is chair of the CRD's Transportation Committee:
" We have seen a trend in the last number of years since 2001 where the number of auto single occupancy vehicles, I think they call them technically, have dropped about 5% in terms of the overall percentage. Transit is up about a percent in that same time. Bicycling has nearly doubled from 2.6 to 5.1%.
Walking numbers are also up.
The survey was done last fall prior to the opening of separated bikes lane, and involved over 7-thousand households.
Jensen says the goal by 2038 is to have 42% of transportation being done either active or by bus - so that's walking, biking, bussing.
Numbers in the CRD core -- Esquimalt, Saanich, Victoria, Oak Bay and View Royal -- numbers are already at 37%, with numbers overall in the mid-20's when outlying municipalities are taken into account.
The CRD conducts the survey every 5 or 6 years to help inform decisions on future transportation options for the region.
