Westshore Parks and Recreation has decided to close the Juan de Fuca Curling Centre immediately, angering the members of the curling centre association.
Members of the Juan de Fuca Curling Centre Association had been hearing a rumour about the possibility for weeks, and had hoped to receive notice ahead of time -- but Monday they received the news by mail.
In a news release Association President Pei Mei Chia calls the news a "bombshell" and expressed disappointment that no prior notice was given. Chia says the news is even more shocking, coming on the heels of a successful Under 18 BC Provincial Championship.
The Association says with over 500 curling members left in limbo, they won't take the decision sitting down and are trying to schedule a meeting with the Parks and Rec Board this week.
The rumours that had been circulating spurred Juan de Fuca Curling Executive to start discussing alternative options.
One possible solution being discussed is to follow in the footsteps of Esquimalt Curling Club, who faced a similar situation a few years ago. They are renting the curling ice/space from Esquimalt Recreation Centre in a semi-private capacity.
A reason for the decision to close to rink has not been made public as yet.
