A local project working with First Nations communities has received a grant from Island Health.
Project Reclaim, associated with the Victoria Sexual Assault Centre, is a project to educate First Nations communities on culturally relevant violence prevention, as well as creating greener, healthier community spaces.
Prevention manager at Victoria Sexual Assault Centre, Elicia Loiselle said the project was started by Beangka Elliott and they started working with her in the past year.
“We connected with Beangka Elliott from Tsarlip who had already designed this youth led land restoration and violence prevention project that she wanted to do in the community,” Loiselle said. We had the funding to support that and we wanted to work with her towards that vision so we joined forces to do that.”
The project was granted $12,000 to help further the work they've been doing since the project was created last summer.
Project Reclaim was one of 45 local non-profits and businesses to receive a grant on the Island.
The grants were rewarded to create local partnerships to health and wellness on the island.
