It's going to cost the CRD more to keep some of the region's kitchen waste out of the Hartland Landfill, but it may only be temporary.
The CRD Board has voted to renew the contract of the current processing and hauling company DL Bins, which transports the kitchen scraps to a provider in Delta on the Lower Mainland and Cobble Hill on the Island.
View Royal Mayor, and CRD Director, David Screech says the cost is $121,000 more than budgeted, allowing the region to investigate regional sites for processing the waste stream. Screech says the increased cost will not be passed on to taxpayers.
"It will be made up with tipping fills with the dump. In the meantime, the CRD is very much looking to build our own in-region processing plant for the kitchen scraps."
Five years ago, the CRD signed a contract with Foundation Organics, but within one year, nearby residents in Central Saanich complained of the smell. Screech says this issue is top of mind in the region's plans going forward.
