As evidenced by our record setting Miracle on Broad Street charity drive this is the season of giving. But not all charities are feeling the love this holiday season.
Donations at some nonprofits like the Salvation Army and Mustard Seed are down significantly this year. Donna Chow tells CTV Vancouver Island that she’s using the Mustard Seed for the first time ever after recently becoming a single Mom. “I just recently got divorced and I made a decision to spend my extra money on legal fees.”
Demand for hampers and turkeys are up but donations are down. The Mustard seed is short some 500 Turkeys and $200,000 in cash donations. The Mustard Seeds Brent Palmer thinks he knows why. “There is such a thing as donor burnout; our incomes don’t go up in comparison to our needs.”
Christmas is now just days away and with nonprofits struggling this season some less fortunate in the CRD may have to go without this season.
