Officials at CFB Esquimalt are hoping to track down the rightful owners of a number of historical items recovered from the waters of Esquimalt Harbour.
"We originally came across these items in doing an environmental remediation project. We were cleaning up some of the historical contamination within the harbour."
CFB Esquimalt senior environment officer Duane Freeman says items recovered include service medals, a wallet with ID in it, and a wedding ring. He says they also found a wallet with identification inside that appears to read Norman Boulton.
"We hope we can track him down and actually reunite him with his entire wallet. His ID card was inside his wallet, and you can imagine his reaction back in the 1940's when he dropped this over the side."
"Our plan is to develop a traveling display case, setting up a permanent display at the base, as well, and really capturing some of the history because some of these items go back to the early-1900's."
Freeman says they'll be doing a number of dredging projects in the harbour over the next four years, and, now that they know what's down there, they'll be on high alert for items of historical value.
