A close call for an experienced hiker on the weekend.
The woman was rescued by emergency crews after she tumbled 100 feet down a cliff in Lone Tree Hill Park. Firefighters performed a rope rescue to reach the stranded hiker, and secured her on a spinal board.
Gregg Fletcher, Deputy Chief of the Highlands Fire Department, said although the woman suffered a bad fall, she was well-prepared for the hike. “They were obviously experienced hikers that were travelling in a group. They were packed all the essentials -- like food and blankets.”
Fletcher said conditions on the trails right now can be treacherous this time of year, and stressed the importance of being well prepared. “Bad footings, some of the rocks are very slippery. She slipped and fell; she hurt her left shoulder suffering a puncture wound, and was complaining of back pain."
The Deputy Fire Chief praised the group for how they handled the situation, calling 911 and comforting their friend until help arrived.
