Victoria-area schools are working to eliminate their current dress codes.
School dress codes have come under fire recently for mainly restricting the clothing of female students in order to prevent male classmates from distraction. Many say the act is "sexist".
The Greater Victoria School District is recommending that its 47 schools limit the dress code ban to only items of clothing that could be considered discriminatory under the BC Human Rights Code.
School Trustee Deborah Nohr says the School District has recommended the current dress code be eliminated.
"About 25-30% of our schools have very specific dress codes. They are kind of outdated. They probably need a revision at the very least. But, this would eradicate any statement at all, any standard, any parameters on dress."
Nohr says the recommendation would include eliminating reference to length of shorts and width of tank top straps.
