The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority is taking steps to ban the feeding of seals and other wildlife at Fisherman's Wharf saying it's a safety hazard, and harms the seals.
The GVHA says research by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans shows hand-feeding of marine mammals habituates wildlife, affects their ability to thrive in the natural environment. and damages ecosystems.
The Authority maintains seal feeding has also become a public safety hazard, attracting other aggressive wildlife like river otters and gulls to the docks.
Visitors will notice improved signage at the docks, and plans are to add educational and interpretation opportunities through the summer season.
There is also a plan to add permanent interpretation panels on the docks.
