Perhaps it's cold comfort when you forced to fill your tank, but there's a petition circulating pushing politicians to lower the price at the pumps.
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation has launched a petition calling on politicians to reduce taxes at the gas pumps in B.C., where prices have hit more than $1.78 for a litre of regular gasoline in some areas.
Gas prices in Greater Victoria continue to hover around 161.9 for a litre of unleaded gasoline at most stations.
B.C. Director of the Canadian Taxpayers, Kris Sims, says the petition wants the province to cancel the carbon tax, reduce the TransLink Tax, and support pipelines so drivers get tax relief and an increased fuel supply.
The B.C. carbon tax is currently 9.8 cents per litre with GST, and the TransLink Tax is expected to increase to 18.5 cents per litre.
There's a noted disparity: Even with factoring in the rate of exchange, Metro Vancouver drivers are paying 50-cents more per litre than drivers in Seattle.
A majority of the gasoline used in British Columbia flows from the Trans Mountain pipeline.
Alberta's Premier Elect Jason Kenney is threatening to restrict the flow of fuel running through the pipe if B.C. Premier Horgan keeps opposing the pipeline's expansion.
