A fuel spill into Esquimalt’s West Bay Marina waters has neighbours and stakeholders worried about marine life.
Curtis Kirkpatrick at West Bay Marina says reports of the oily sheen came in about a week ago.
He says dead fish are showing up in the water and fear its having a massive effect on the marine life.
“It’s very concerning because it is a migratory bird area as well as a nursery for millions of baby fish,” said Kirkpatrick.
Jeff Miller with Esquimalt Public Works says the spill has been linked to a home oil heating tank and says they are working with the homeowner.
“They have replaced the tank and we have intercepted the drain pipe so if there is any more on the land it is not going to intercept into the storm drain and then we are going to work with them to make sure is no more on the soil.”
It's unclear how much oil has spilled into the water but it looks to be a long way from being cleaned up.
