Island Health says 4 deaths on Vancouver Island may be directly linked to the flu outbreak. This year hospital visits for flu-related illness are up compared to the same time last year. All four deaths were diagnosed with the flu but according to health officials, it wasn't necessarily the ultimate cause of death.
People with underlying health conditions and the elderly are more at risk for the serious complications of influenza, including death.
“This year the strain that’s most common is an Influenza A H3N2, which does tend to affect the elderly more,” said Dr. Dee Hoyano, a medical health officer.
Island Health recommends washing your hands regularly, staying home if you’re sick and getting vaccinated.
