Five teens were injured in a roll-over collision in Oak Bay late last night.
Police responded to a crash Thursday night at 11:20 p.m., and at first due to the nature of the crash, they believed it was a fatal collision, according to Oak Bay deputy chief Ray Bernoties.
“Our members upon arrival saw what looked to be a pretty horrific collision and thought they were attending a fatality,” Bernoties said. “It turns out all five of the young people that were in the car were seat belted and although they suffered a variety of injuries it wasn’t a fatality fortunately.”
The driver was sober, and Bernoties said although having a designated sober driver is important, an emphasis still needs to be put on safe driving.
“I think it’s great there’s a sober designated driver and that everyone was seat belted,” Bernoties said. “We still need to drive cautiously, and these are our precious young people and we need to be mindful of that and make sure that our kids are as well.”
The cause of the collision has not yet been determined, but police say speed may have been a factor.
