It was 160 years ago today that the Fisgard lighthouse at Fort Rodd Hill officially began operating.
At sundown on November 16th, 1860, the light was first lit at Fisgard Lighthouse, and the lighthouse is still active today.
Michelle Holmes is the Site Manager at the Fort Rodd Hill and says because of COVID-19 the celebration will be virtual:
" Being mindful of COVID and how life is a little bit upside down everywhere today, what we are doing is celebrating it online. So you can go to our Facebook Page and
you can see a series of stories and photos about either the people, or the equipment, or the events that have happened at Fisgard over the last 160 years."
Fisgard Lighthouse was the first lighthouse in Western Canada -- and helped make the coastline in this area safer for sea farers, leading to population and economic growth.
You can join the celebration and learn more about the significance of the lighthouse on the Fort Rodd Hill's Facebook page.
