A house-fire on the Songhees Nation territory sent one person to hospital, and destroyed an upstairs room, causing thousand of dollars in damages.
View Royal, Esquimalt, and Colwood fire crews responded to a fire shortly after noon on Monday, January 21st.
View Royal Fire Chief Paul Hurst says together, they were able to contain the blaze.
"On arrival, crews found heavy fire coming out of the second floor bedroom. A quick defensive attack and then transitioned into an interior attack managed to contain the fire to the room of origin."
He says because of the fire's location, all three fire departments dispatched crews, which led to them containing the fire quickly and efficiently.
Hurst adds that the residents were waiting outside when crews arrived, they have been alerted when the smoke detector went off. One person was treated for smoke inhalation, and taken to hospital, while the other residents were unharmed.
The fire caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage, according to Hurst.
"The room is, obviously, gutted. We do have heavy smoke, heat and water damage throughout the top floor. The occupants have been displaced, the View Royal/Colwood ESS team is going to be looking after them, giving them accommodations, and food, and clothing for the next 72 hours until the insurance kicks in. And then the administration and Songhees Nation will be helping the displaced residents."
The View Royal Fire Investigators attended the scene, and are determining the cause of the fire.
