A new science investment to help the endangered resident killer whale population has been announced.
The world-leading University of Victoria initiative Ocean Networks Canada has received $7.2 million in new funding from Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The money will be used to enhance ONC's current network of oceanographic radars and underwater hydrophones in key coastal locations.
Data collected helps to inform navigation and emergency response ranging from ships in distress to oil spills. Acoustic data will help plan strategies to protect marine mammals like the killer whale from underwater noise which has been identified as a concern.
