The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority has received a pretty sizeable cash injection to mark the 100th anniversary of the Ogden Point breakwater.
A matching grant of $350,000 by the Department of Canadian Heritage comes just as a weekend celebration is about to get underway on Saturday.
Plans for the breakwater began in 1913, and the last of more than 10-thousand granite blocks, each weighing 15 tons was placed on the structure in 1917.
In the time since its construction, the Ogden Point breakwater has required very limited repairs. In 2013, GVHA installed handrails making it safer for walking and sightseeing.
With matching funds from Canadian Heritage, GVHA will design and implement art displays, interpretive panels and viewing platforms and benches.
A drop-in to celebrate the breakwater's 100th anniversary, beginning with ‘Breakfast at the Breakwater’ is planned for this Saturday.
