The Department of National Defence is attributing most of a roughly $300-million increase to the projected price of a jetties replacement project at CFB Esquimalt to construction and contingency costs.
The government announced last week that a tender had been issued for part of the work tied to a $781-million dollar project to destroy and rebuild two jetties at the Esquimalt naval base.
But three years prior, when the project was announced, it was estimated to cost between $430 and $530-million dollars -- $250 to $350-million dollars less than the initial projection.
The Department of National Defence says $203 million dollars of the increase is tied directly to revised construction and material costs stemming from further engineering and environmental studies.
Another $128-million of the new project cost is for a contingency fund, which wasn't factored into the original estimate.
