It's going to cost the Capital Regional District more to divert kitchen scraps from the landfill.
The CRD Board will vote Wednesday to grant to D.L. Bins a three-year contract to haul and process the region's kitchen waste at a rate of $143.73 a tonne for about 6,500 tonnes a year at an estimated annual cost of $934,245.
Members of the CRD's environmental services committee have been told the contract is $121,000 more than budgeted, but that it was the only contract to come in, with the current contract set to expire February 28th.
The staff report to be considered by the CRD Board states that awarding the three-year hauling and processing contract will allow time for in-region, or near-region alternatives to be investigated.
Kitchen scraps collected by municipalities of Esquimalt, Sidney and View Royal have historically be managed through CRD contracts.
Victoria, Oak Bay and Saanich have their kitchen scraps collected with yard and garden waste.
