The Capital Regional District is asking the province to consider a pilot study to cut down on speeding on the Malahat Highway.
Chair Barb Desjardins has written to Minister of Public Safety, Mike Farnworth and Attorney General David Eby requesting the pilot study using interval cameras on the highway between Langford Parkway and the Mill Bay Road underpass, a 20 kilometre stretch that's been contentious in recent years.
The interval cameras take photos of a vehicle at different points along a route and calculate the time it took that vehicle to travel between the points. Anyone caught travelling the distance in less time than allowed gets mailed a ticket.
Desjardins says in her letter that the use of interval-based enforcement has proven successful in every other jurisdiction where it has been employed.
