For the first time in 160 years the Craigflower Schoolhouse, a national historic site at 2755 Admirals Rd. in Saanich, is facing a property tax bill.
Ken Johnson, president of the Hallmark Heritage Society says the Craigflower Schoolhouse is being taxed on an assessed value of $138,000
"We pay for the maintenance and upkeep, to get this bill in the mail was a bit of a shock."
Johnson believes the bill will come to almost $3,000 a Third of the Society's annual budget. The Craigflower property is owned by the province.
Saanich says property tax exemptions for non-profit organizations are controlled by the B.C. Assessment Authority by formal request only and so far they have not received one.
