Counter Attack road checks start tonight. Police departments on Vancouver Island will be lighting up the highways and roadways looking for impaired drivers.
Cst. Scott Seuter is the media liaison officer with the Island District Traffic Services.
He says the annual campaign is aimed at encouraging motorists to plan ahead and make smart decisions to get home safely this holiday season.
" We know statistically speaking in Canada that impaired driving is the leading criminal cause of death in Canada. We know that mopre p[ersons die as a result of impaired driving collisions. And we take it as a high priority in the law enforcement community."
Across the province 86 people on average die every year in crashes involving impaired driving. On Vancouver Island 13 people on average are killed.
