The BC Coroners Service confirms it is investigating the death of a woman at Mount St. Mary Hospital Monday night.
Spokesman Andy Watson says the incident involved a woman in her 50's:
" I can confirm that the BC Coroner's Service is in the very early stages of its fact finding investigation at that location involving a female in her late 50's. And the Coroner's Service investigation will look to determine how, when, where, and by what means this lady came to her death."
Police and Fire crews were dispatched to the scene.
Victoria Deputy Fire Chief Dan Atkinson confirms his crews got the call about 8pm:
" We started with dispatching our full compliment for a report of a structure fire. Shortly thereafter we received notification through our BCAS notification system that we would potentially be treating an individual for burns as well."
Atkinson says when they got their hospital staff had managed to extinguish the fire using an extinguisher. Damage was confined to a chair.
Police have deemed the death "non-suspicious."
Mount St Mary Hospital is home to 200 residents requiring complex care.
