Something has to give, and Victoria's building boom has put one high profile development project on hold for now.
Councillors voted Thursday night to defer work on the David Foster Harbour Pathway along the downtown harbour because of the hefty price tag and lack of bids on construction.
The city had planned to build two pedestrian bridges at Raymur Point and Heron Cove in James Bay. The budget for the project is about $4.27 million. Only one bid was received and it came in $1 million over budget.
Fraser Work, the city's director of engineering says the city is now in a holding pattern.
"The recommendation was to pause for now until we could actually achieve the threshold of affordability that we are looking for in that whole program."
A decision was made to defer work on the bridges and focus instead on other parts of the pathway including a section through Reeson Park and the Johnson Street Bridge pedestrian underpass.
