Colwood Mayor says it doesnt make sense to spend more on a study that may sit on shelf for 20 years

Saying the need for a sewage treatment plant on the West Shore is about 2 decades away, Colwood Council has voted against going ahead with a wastewater treatment groundwater study.

It was 2 months ago the Capital Regional District gave the thumbs up to building a sewage treatment plant at Esquimalt's McLoughlin Point at the cost of $765-million.

Colwood Mayor Carol Hamilton says “We did our best to steer the wastewater treatment plan in a better direction. At this point it doesn't made sense to continue to put more effort, more money, and more resources into a study that will sit on a shelf for 20 years. It would not be a prudent use of taxpayer dollars."

Colwood Council voted unanimously to request the Project Board postpone the environmental assessment until the McLoughlin Point wastewater treatment plant is within an estimated 5 years of capacity.

They are also asking that funds set aside to carry out the study be set aside in a reserve fund.
