Victoria Christmas bird counters are hoping that the current dry weather continues just a little bit longer.
On Saturday, December 16, more than 200 people, novices to experts are headed to the streets, parks and beaches to count all the birds they can find.
Ann Nightingale, coordinator for the Victoria Christmas Bird Count Circle, says in addition to our regular winter residents, there have been a good number of rarities turning up, including White-winged Crossbills, Pine Grosbeaks, Common Redpolls, a Clark's Nutcracker in Oak Bay, and an eastern Blue Jay at Ten-mile Point.
In 2016, the teams contributed more than 500 hours, covering more than 1100 kms in their search, counting a grand total of 73,050 individual birds.
The species count total was the highest of all Canadian counts last year.
