City staff say it's unfortunate people around the old Northern Junk Buildings downtown are choosing not to use a nearby needle drop box.
A Hazmat official told CFAX this week they've been checking the area daily to ensure the safety of actors and animals involved in a movie shoot near Reeson Park, and they've been finding between 30 and 40 needles a day.
Victoria's director of engineering and public works Fraser Work says they have 14 needle drop boxes scattered throughout the city that are checked at least three times a week, including one right in Reeson Park.
"If we found that they were at capacity we would be recommending either more boxes or different designs. We put them in the places that have identified themselves through public consultation and through feedback from the community. We make them visible; we make them known; and we hope they're used appropriately."
Work says the response to reports of discarded needles depends on if they're found on municipal or private land. He says there's support information available on the city's website.
