Preliminary work has begun to test ground conditions at McLoughlin Point for the Wastewater Treatment Plant. This geotechnical work is needed to locate the top of the bedrock, test the soils and rock to design supporting foundations and structures.
Construction of the Wastewater Treatment Plant will not go ahead until the Township of Esquimalt issues a development.
Speaking on CFAX Friday, Jane Bird, chair of the Core Area Wastewater Treatment Project Board says she is confident Esquimalt will come through with the permit and she doesn't anticipate any cost overruns on the project.
"We have a robust budget that has been extensively developed, and it has a significant contingency and if there are overruns, effectively it will be paid for by the CRD, not by the province nor the federal government--their contributions are capped. That said, I am very comfortable that the budget is robust and I'm not anticipating cost overruns."
The site at McLoughlin Point will provide tertiary treatment to the Care Area's wastewater.
