A CFB Esquimalt service member critically injured in an unexplained accident last week has died.
The Department of National Defence has announced that Master Seaman Guillermo Morales Castellon was the service member involved, and that he died of his injuries on Friday with his wife at his side.
He was rushed to hospital last Monday morning after an accident at 443 Maritime Helicopter Squadron. Few details of the accident have been released. An internal investigation is underway.
In a statement to media, Master Seaman Morales Castellon's wife says work safety was one of her huband's main priorities. She says he always made sure everyone was safe before performing a dangerous task. She says that spilled over into his personal life, as well, as he was constantly watching over her, despite the distance between them from Victoria to Montreal.
She says her husband loved life and cared about people, and that he was passionate about nature and cooking.
Captain Steven Waddell, the base commander for CFB Esquimalt, writes that it's an extremely difficult time, and that his deepest sympathies go out to the service member's family, friends, and colleagues.
