With edible cannabis products slated to hit the market in Canada next fall, Health Canada has drafted regulations that include with strict limits on ingredients and dosage.
Among the suggested proposals are child resistant packaging, not producing edibles in the same factory as other foods, and restricting flavours that would appeal to youth.
Ted Smith -- president and founder of the Victoria Cannabis Buyers Club -- says he has no problem with those.
But he does take issue with a proposal to limit a single capsule to 10 milligrams of THC -- the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana that makes users feel high:
" I can tell you for medicinal patients that we serve 10 milligrams per serving isn't adequate. A lot of patients, whether they are dealing with chronic pain or cancer or trying to get over opiates, the 10 milligram dosage is far too small."
Smith says some patients would require more than a dozen capsules at once to get the relief they need if TCH is limited to just 10 milligrams.
Health Canada recommends keeping the dose low in edibles because of the appeal to children.
