Canada's ninth-widest Douglas fir tree was cut down last week.
The massive tree stood 216 feet tall and was 10 feet in diameter.
Unfortunately the tree was standing within a planned cutblock near Port Alberni auctioned off by the BC government's logging agency -- BC Timber Sales.
Ancient Forest Alliance Executive Director Ken Wu says the colossal tree was felled two weeks after enviromentalists discovered it.
"It was 800 years old - maybe older."
Ken Wu says thousands of old-growth trees are being logged in the Nahmint Valley.
"These are like the trees in the movie Avatar. They are some of the oldest and largest living organisms that have ever existed on earth. British Columbia is one of the last jurisdictions that still has these thousand year old ancient forests. About 75 percent has been logged and the remainder is largely still slated for logging. So it's a race against time right now."
Wu says the BC government is dragging it's feet on the Big Tree Protection policy announced seven years ago.
The Ministry of Forests says the policy is still under development, and won't be officially implemented for another year or two.
