It was later than expected, but a barge carrying the first shipment of steel for the new Johnson Street Bridge arrived Tuesday evening.
Originally scheduled to get into Victoria's harbour between 3-and-5 in the afternoon, in the end it was the 8 o'clock before the tugboat and barge entered the harbour and made its way to the Point Hope Shipyard. The city said strong winds and currents lead to the delays, as the steel made the voyage from Vancouver where it first arrived onboard a cargo ship from China.
This shipment from includes the north and south rings, the lower counterweight and a temporary structure used to support the various components of the bridge during installation.
The barge will be unloaded at Point Hope Shipyard.
