BC Lottery Corporation is looking for a partner to develop and operate a potential new casino in Victoria.
In a news release BCLC says the selected partner will be responsible for finding an appropriate location in collaboration with BCLC. Once a location is determined and approved by BCLC, it would be brought forward to City Council and the public.
As required by the Gaming Control Act, once a casino facility proposal is put forward, the City of Victoria will need to seek and consider community input.
In the meantime, BCLC asked Ipsos Reid to conduct an online survey of Greater Victoria residents regarding a casino. They surveyed more than 500 residents in the Capital Regional District, with more than half saying the region would see an overall benefit, and 69 per cent saying they believe it would appeal to tourists.
Although respondents were neutral about the concept of adding a facility, they saw tax revenue, tourism and jobs were as the main benefits. Residents also indicated concerns related to gambling addiction.
Because of that BCLC plans to complete a Health Impact Assessment to measure health effects of a proposed new casino and entertainment facility in Victoria, which they say will help local decision makers to understand and mitigate health risks.
