The B-C government has immediately halted all hunting for grizzly bears in the province.
Forests Minister Doug Donaldson and Environment Minister George Heyman made the announcement this morning, saying the ban begins right away for resident and non-resident hunters.
Green party spokesman Adam Olsen calls the decision a "momentous accomplishment" and credits party leader, Andrew Weaver for working tirelessly to get the BC Liberals to budge on their pro-trophy hunting position.
"He did work on this issue for a number of years, continuing to keep it in the forefront and trying to find solutions to solving the problem, We are happy that we have this relationship with the government, that we've been part of making this very important change."
Olson says it’s a huge step for grizzly bear conservation, but there is still work that needs to be done to protect the grizzly bear habitat.
