New Democrat Mitzi Dean took a comfortable lead in Esquimalt-Metchosin, a reconfigured riding.
The riding’s boundaries were redrawn since the 2013 election. Vic West was dropped but Metchosin included.
The latest counts had her leading BC Liberals’ Barb Desjardins early in last night's race.
Dean highlighted housing and transportation as the major issues facing the riding.
"I'd really like to make sure that housing affordability is addressed that meets the needs of our community and that we take some action on transit. That can really improve the quality of people's lives."
Dean, who is a political newcomer is best known in the community as the executive director for the Pacific Centre Family Services Association in Colwood.
She holds onto a seat that the NDP has held since 2005.
