President of BC Construction Association says the anniversary of the Alaska earthquake is a sobering milestone to reflect on how BC should be better prepared.

Today marks the 54th anniversary of a devastating earthquake and tsunami in Alaska.

The magnitude 9.2 earthquake on the afternoon of March 27th, 1964, lasted about 4 and a half minutes and spawned massive tsunamis that killed 131 people.

Chris Atchison, President of BC Construction Association says it's a sobering milestone to reflect on how British Columbia should be better prepared.

Atchison warns building to 'code' isn't good enough.

"We live in such a natural risk hazard zone, that we as a greater community and as a province need to come together, to figure out everyone's role. Construction needs to pe part of the community discusssion. Because it's not a matter of 'if' - it's just a matter of 'when'."

As part of construction and skilled trades month in April, the BC Construction Association is staging a 'U-R +' or 'Understanding Risk BC' seminars on Monday April 16 and Tuesday April 17 at the Victoria Conference Centre.
