A medical marijuana business in Victoria says it's hard for them to find banking services, which is why they were receiving a bag of cash over a Helijet flight that was seized by police.
The CEO of Baked Edibles, Dieter MacPherson, says they sold marijuana oils to a dispensary in Vancouver and payment was sent back in the form of an unattended bag of cash on a Helijet flight.
MacPherson says they operate in cash since banks won't work with them, "the dispensary industry and the businesses that surround it have difficulties banking in Canada. This is one of the things that obviously needs to be addressed heading into legalization."
He says they're hoping to get the money returned.
Victoria Police Constable Matt Rutherford says the reason officers got involved was because somebody complained that the bag smelled of pot.
"We attended the 0 block of Dallas Road after it was reported to us that there was a strong smell of marijuana coming from a package... when they opened up the package they found some money and they seized the money and they're investigating," says Constable Rutherford. He confirms no drugs were found but they think the bag previously contained marijuana accounting for the smell. Police won't say more than that as their investigation continues.
Vic-PD says this was the second marijuana related case at the same location. The previous Tuesday, January 10th, police seized 30 pounds of marijuana and one person faces possible charges. Police have not connected the two cases. MacPherson says he was unaware of the January 10th seizure and says it had nothing to do with Baked Edibles.
