The B.C. Federation of Labour is calling for stricter enforcement on safety barriers and harnesses on construction sites after a roofer fell from a four-storey building in James Bay.
The 30-year-old roofer suffered serious injuries when he fell onto the pavement from the roof of the Arran House apartments at 545 Rithet St. Wednesday morning.
Irene Lanzinger with the BC Federation of Labour says some employers and workers are not following the rules that are in place.
"There isn't enough enforcement and inspection of these work sites and there isn't enough in terms of penalties when employers break the rules, those are things we've been calling for over and over again."
He was not wearing a harness and there were no guard rails around the roof. It’s unclear what caused the man to fall.
It’s the second time this year a man has been seriously injured or killed after a fall at a construction site in Greater Victoria.
