B.C. and Washington State officials will hold a joint news conference tomorrow (Wed) about the Asian giant hornet -- also known as the "Murder Hornet."
The news conference will reveal how officials on both sides of the border will team up to locate, trap and eradicate the invasive hornets across the Pacific Northwest.
The Asian giant hornet species, which grows to about the size of a quarter, kills domestic bees.
According to a U.S. advisory the plans for 2021 in B.C. includes traps in areas where there were previous findings, and networking with B.C. beekeepers, local governments and partner agencies.
In 2019 nest was destroyed near Nanaimo, and 6 hornets have been found in the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland.
According to the advisory, there will be continued work in Nanaimo and the Cowichan Valley, and in the Fraser Valley, from White Rock to Aldergrove.
No sightings or collection of Asian giant hornets were reported on Vancouver Island last year -- and if no specimens are found this year, the island could be declared Asian giant hornet-free.
The first nest to be discovered in the United States was destroyed in October last year in Washington state’s Whatcom County, just south of the BC Border.
