It's the one year anniversary of beefed up distracted driving laws and while the law worked for a while, drivers are backsliding.
It's been a full year since beefed up distracted driving laws came into effect.
As of June 1st, 2016 fines jumped to $386.00 and distracted drivers also got hit with 4 demerit points.
VicPD's Sergeant Alex Yelovatz says while the law worked for a while, drivers are still hanging on to their electronic devices behind the wheel. "It hasn't subsided, for some people, it's the cost of doing business. It's compulsive with people. Ultimately that's what it is, it's compulsive."
The increased fines and demerit points haven't deterred people so Constable Andy Dunstan is calling for even tougher laws. "If people lose their car for 24 hours they suddenly have to re-think their whole schedule, their whole day. I think that will be a real behaviour changer."
Distracted driving is the second leading cause of fatal crashes in B.C.
