An emergency resolution aimed at solving the long-standing derelict boat problem passed unanimously at a weekend meeting of the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities.
The resolution, drafted by Nanaimo-Ladysmith NDP MP Sheila Malcolmson, would designate the Canadian Coast Guard as the agency responsible for directing the removal and recycling of abandoned vessels.
Malcolmson hopes it will also spur creation of a comprehensive national strategy to prevent abandoned and derelict vessels from becoming a serious environmental and navigational hazard.
Malcolmson says since 2008 there have been calls for action from the provincial and federal governments to get polluting wrecks out of coastal waters. She hopes with AVICC's endorsement the government will now act now on the united call for action.
Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps co-sponsored the emergency resolution alongside the District of Oak Bay and Town of Ladysmith. Helps says abandoned vessels are having a significant and negative impact on our natural ecosystems and local emergency response services, and hopes the federal government will act swiftly.
