A senior dog that survived a near-fatal flea infestation thrived in a new loving home for the last months of his life -- but has sadly passed away now.
When the terrier named Rascal was seized by the SPCA last year he had an estimated 100-thousand flead on him and has lost 85% of his blood supply.
He was also malnourished, weak and barely able to stand and needed immediate blood transfusions and other medical attention to save his life.
Marcie Moriarty, thje BC-SPCA's Chief Prevention and enforcement officer, says Rascal was fostered during his recovery by a caring couple who have been long-time volunteers at the BC SPCA's Nanaimo Branch. When he was ready for adoption they decided to keep him.
Despite having ongoing health issues, Moriarty wants people to know Rascal had an amazing life in his new home before he passed away earlier this year from natural causes.
60 year old Gary Kenneth Bob of Lantzville was sentenced this week, and has been banned from owning or having custody of an animal for 5 years, and was fined $250
In May 2018, Rascal received the BC SPCA's Animal Courage Award for his resilience in the face of suffering.
