Poppy donation boxes in Nanaimo are being targeted by thieves.
Five donation boxes have been stolen from various businesses in the last week.
RCMP are investigating the thefts, and say businesses should lock down their donation boxes with zap straps or locks, as thieves can easily make off with these boxes.
The donation boxes were stolen from the Tim Horton's, McDonalds, Delicado’s, Pomme Natural Market, and an insurance company. All of these businesses are located in North Nanaimo.
Photos of the suspect from the Delicado's theft are posted below.
Constable Gary O'Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP says "Businesses should empty the boxes frequently, as criminals don't care. Whether it's for Remembrance day or somebody dying of cancer, it's a crime of opportunity and we have to take away the opportunity."
He says although most criminals avoid stealing donation boxes, these types of thefts happen this time of year, every year.
O'Brien says they suspect only one or two people are committing these thefts.
Nanaimo RCMP are asking anyone with information on the thefts to contact them at 250-754-2345. If you wish to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at www.nanaimocrimestoppers.com or call 1-800-222-8477.
