A four vehicle accident on the Malahat this morning backed up both south and northbound lanes on the last day of the BC Day long weekend.
Cnst Ian Wetzel-Eden with the Shawnigan Lake RCMP says a southbound truck lost a tire:
"A vehicle travelling southbound had a critical mechanical failure causing a tire to become disconnected from his vehicle causing him to lose control, head into the oncoming northbound lane striking 2 vehicles. And then his tire also striking a fourth. So 4 vehicles involved."
The incident caused traffic to be backed up in both directions.
Injuries were minor, but at least 1 person was taken to hospital to be checked out.
Wetzel-Eden says it's fortunate construction slowed traffic because it could have been a far more serious accident.
Also fortunate he says, the Integrated Road Safety Unit was in the vicinity conducting enforcement. They were on scene within minutes setting up a safety area for those involved.
