The North American Indigenous Games council just announced Halifax as the host city for the 2020 games.
Leading up to this decision, there was a push for Victoria to be the host city, who previously hosted the games in 1997. Western Canada has also previously hosted the games in Cowichan in 2008.
This marks the first time the tournament was hosted in Eastern Canada.
“While disappointed, we are truly honoured to have been part of this process that saw unprecedented support from across cultures and across the region. Working together, we presented a strong message of meaningful reconciliation not only to the NAIG Council, but also to our youth,” said Ron Sam, Chief Songhees Nation.
“Three very strong bids were presented in Montreal and I’m very proud of our bid committee and our youth who stood with us in our presentation. We congratulate Halifax and wish them every success as they work toward hosting the North American Indigenous Games in 2020.”
Stephen McNeil, premier of Nova Scotia and minister of Aboriginal affairs, extended his congratulations to the Mi’kmaq Sport Council of Nova Scotia.
“This is a very proud moment for the Mi’kmaq Sport Council, our Mi’kmaw communities and all Nova Scotians,” McNeil said. “The games will be an exciting opportunity to showcase our province and celebrate Mi’kmaw culture and heritage as we cheer on the athletes.”
